Emergency Supplies and Traveling Kits for Pets - Pixie Bigelow - Facebook.

Emergency Supplies and Traveling Kits
Keep an Evac-Pack and supplies handy for your pets. Make sure that everyone in the family knows where it is. This kit should be clearly labeled and easy to carry. Items to consider keeping in or near your pack include:
• Pet first-aid kit
• 3-7 days' worth of canned (pop-top) or dry food (be sure to rotate every two months)
• Disposable litter trays (aluminum roasting pans are perfect)
• Litter or paper toweling
• Liquid dish soap and disinfectant
• Pet feeding dishes
• Extra collar or harness as well as an extra leash
• Photocopies of medical records and a waterproof container with a two-week supply of any medicine your pet requires (Remember, food and medications need to be rotated out of your emergency kit-otherwise they may go bad or become useless.)
• Bottled water, at least 7 days' worth for each person and pet (store in a cool, dry place and replace every two months)
• A traveling bag, crate or sturdy carrier, ideally one for each pet
• Flashlight
• Blanket (for scooping up a fearful pet)
• Recent photos of your pets (in case you are separated and need to make "Lost" posters)
• Especially for cats: Pillowcase or EvackSack, toys, scoopable litter
• Especially for dogs: Extra leash, toys and chew toys, a week's worth of cage liner.
You should also have an emergency kit for the human members of the family. Items to include: Batteries, duct tape, flashlight, radio, multi-tool, tarp, rope, permanent marker, spray paint, baby wipes, protective clothing and footwear, extra cash, rescue whistle, important phone numbers, extra medication and copies of medical and insurance information.

FIREWORKS & PETS -- IMPORTANT Tips, Advice and Information @http://www.drkatrina.com/yourpet/PetTips/FireworksandandPets.aspx - This page works well also for tips, advice and information in regards to storms and your pet.

When your Pet first goes missing, please do the following.

* Post your LOST pet notice including photo and detailed information on our wall.

* Make sure their Registration and Microchip information is up to date
http://www.petaddress.com.au/

* Place large Posters up around the area, with a photo and description of your pet and contact details. Please ensure any photos you use in your posters are clear/high quality photos so as people can easily identify your lost pet (the same applies for posting photos online). If you want to offer a reward put "REWARD OFFERED" and do not disclose the amount at any time !

* Ask neighbours to check in and around their yard (and on their roof as some cats have be known to become 'stuck' on a roof)

* Walk around your neighbourhood, looking and asking if anyone has seen your pet (it's advised that you be holding up your lost pet flyer so people will know you are not a salesperson thus will be more receptive)

* Place Lost ads in the local and national news papers in your area (if you have the budget), also place online ads with all the Lost and Found sites in your area

Also check Gumtree and your local pound

★ REMEMBER ★ NEVER give up looking for your pet, they want you to find them ! :-)

Why I left my favourite Facebook group

Why I left my favourite Facebook group

I was put in the most terrible position, of having to leave my favourite Facebook group. The Pet Rat Lovers group are a very warm bunch of people, and the page is generally well run - with minimal input from admin. It's the largest rat interest group on Facebook, boasting 1,200 members, but of course, only a handful of dedicated regulars do the bulk of the posting. Most posts are about a loved rat that has passed on, or a new arrival, or questions about health and care.

The part I loved the most about the page is the photographs of other people's rats, and their cages. There are a couple of very talented photographers in the group who put a lot of time and effort into creating excellent pictures. But even those pics taken with just a smartphone and discussed were invaluable. Lots of pics are posted, and I enjoy them all. I've posted my own work from time to time. I don't post much of my studio work, but anything I take with my iPhone is usually okay to publish.

I'm not paranoid about my work being stolen. We live in an era of digital images, and such images are no longer worth any real money. Back in the 1980's, you could sell a good picture easily. A couple of years ago, I captured a clear picture of a man reading a newspaper while driving a huge truck. I couldn't sell this image, and I tried hard - but many media outlets encouraged me to 'submit' my work. Newspapers are a dying industry - they didn't want to buy it. TV and internet media can get images like my one for free. It was a good pic, but it was worthless. So I woke up to the fact that digital images are now captured by just about everybody, and they have no currency anymore. However, I still want to try to maintain control over my images, and under no circumstances will I ever release rights to my art, except if that work is sold. Facebook's own ToS are very savage for artists - and we have to be careful about what is uploaded there. But the Pet Rat Lover's group have claimed ownership of every picture I have uploaded to their page. I certainly won't upload so much as an iPhone snap to the page under the new ToS.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. You see, I was forced to leave the Pet Rat Lovers group because they posted new Terms of Service (ToS), which read like a company contract (impossible, technical wording designed to confuse rather than clarify), and claimed ownership of every picture posted, and just about any bit of text. In attempting to block spammers, they locked up their members so tight that it's nearly impossible to post something which doesn't break the rules in some way. Even if a post didn't breach the rules, the ToS are written so poorly that a user could never be sure if they were breaking them or not - they would rely on 'clarification' from admin. What constitutes as 'veterinary advice' for instance? Is it okay to repeat something your vet said?

The actual Terms of Service are very long, and I will include them at the end of this post, in case you're masochistic enough to read them. Remember, this is a pet rat fancier's page - not a business (or the CIA!)

I believe they were written by Cynthia Philip and Holly Gold. These are both very nice people, and I can't imagine what they're thinking to resort to such draconian legal moves on a pet's page. Holly started the group, a few years ago now, and Cynthia is her 'right-hand' admin. They both work well as a team, and to date have run the group very well, with little flak occurring on the page itself. They deal with all issues correctly, in PM. They never publicly berate a member. They are a good team to have running this popular group.

I can't understand what made them think that these rules were required! As an admin of popular page myself, I know how frustrating spammers can be, and others, who just want to abuse the popularity of the page. We must constantly be alert for people abusing the page. We haven't had to resort to making any rules at all - our members are all older, responsible people who rarely put a foot wrong. They value the page, and so they look after it. They don't need admin chasing them around with a big stick!

Pet Rat Lovers group is not a closed group! All traffic appears in my news feed. On a busy day, rat traffic can become a bit much, and I've considered it to be a bit spammy at times. The issue of making the group a closed group (which would stop the news feed posts) was discussed, but the senior admin of Pet Rat Lovers did not even comment on the issue that was raging on. The members were divided, with the majority of the group wanting to change the group to a closed group to stop the spammy posts. I did argue for an open group at the time. There was much less traffic back then. Obviously the admins of the group wanted it left open, because they ignored the huge swell of opinion that suggested the group should be closed. They made no official statement regarding the matter, and the issue is still in limbo.

Well, there are a few things about these ToS that put up a brick wall for me. For a start, there is their complexity and construction, and wording. This is very poorly done, and it would be a HUGE effort by anyone to even read and understand what is written. Those that have taken the time to read them have posted their horror at what they contain. If you can stand reading them, you'll find that Pet Rat Lovers group take possession of every piece of traffic that is posted on their page. They think they have a right to do that, as their page is their brand.

Indeed, they do have a right to try to protect their page in this manner. It is compulsory for all members to type 'I agree' in the comments to acknowledge the new ToS. Members are blindly typing 'I agree' on the post, despite the objections from some members, and those members stating that they do not wish to sign such an agreement. It is assumed that those who don't type 'I agree' in the comments will be removed from the group.

If I can't upload my rat pics there, and I have to be careful about what I say in case it breaches some obscure clause of the ToS, then the group has lost my interest. It has become work to do anything other than 'like' other people's posts - the safest interaction of all.

     So, I posted this:

I have left the group. I'm disappointed. The other rat groups on Facebook are pretty lame, and their communities are not very active. I'm fast losing faith in all things Facebook actually. My pet peeve is having my news feed suddenly jump about ten posts while I'm trying to read it. When it does that now, I close Facebook in the hope that they can see this in the Analytics - I can see this kind of info on Google Analytics for my websites. I want Facebook to know that I am deliberately closing their page when they pull crap like that.

I still have Cynthia Philip on my friends list, and I have no plans to remove her. She is a very nice person who is very community minded. However, I think the new rules are her idea - they have her hallmarks on them. I would like Cynthia to understand that I (respectfully and candidly) believe power has gone to her head, and she has created 'busy' work for all members, just to satisfy her own ego. The rules are not required to protect the group. Facebook's own ToS cover abusive behaviour - and allow for an admin to remove a member without explanation. There is nothing special about rat content that it needs to be specifically mentioned in a set of rules outside of Facebook's ToS.

(Update: Cynthia has since stated that she did not write the ToS. After Cynthia read this post, she removed me as a friend, and removed me from another group as well.)

Farewell Pet Rat Lovers. I've been a member for years. I've been active, and 'like' posts every day. I often comment, and I post stuff of my own. It's sad that I think the members will mostly accept the ToS. There is some resistance, but people are agreeing. People give away their freedom, and then complain when they find all their rights have been taken away. People's rights disappear in tiny, hard to detect nips, never in a block.

Wanna know how useless these ToS are? I'm breaching them by publishing them here. In fact, I'm supposedly breaching international (!) copyright laws! But these do allow me to take a snippet, which is covered by (copyright) law - you may reproduce up to a certain amount of material for your own purposes - even commercial ones. In a book, I think you can copy a page and a third of text, but don't quote me, I'm rusty. However, I know enough to know that if it came to a legal battle, I could get these ToS thrown out before the trial even begins. They would not be recognised as a legal document. They are worthless. Just as well. The Indemnification section (3) says that I will be responsible for their legal costs!

At the time of writing, more than a day after the new ToS were announced, there have been 47 members out of 1,200 agree. There were two objections and 1 was unsure. I guess they'll be purging around 1,100 members. Maybe I should start a group?

(Update: I've since realised that the ToS were posted about 12 months ago - but the conversation on the pinned thread discussing them and containing member's objections was current. I had just never bothered to read them.)

Update - December, 2013:

Cynthia Philip left Pet Rat Lovers group. The Terms of Use were changed. The new ToU are much simpler and clearly state that the artist retains ownership of the image. The group went from being an open group to a closed group, and I remained friends with Holly. After discussing the situation with Holly, I asked for and received permission to join Pet Rat Lovers group once again.

Note that the Terms of Use reproduced below are no longer the ToU of the Pet Rat Lovers Facebook group.

Here are the Pet Rat Lovers group Terms Of Service. Be amazed!

    Forum Etiquette/Controversial Subject Matter

Remember that the biggest rule for using the group is: Treat everyone with respect, even and especially when you disagree with them. Flaming of any kind will not be tolerated. Such posts can and will be deleted by administrator(s) with no prior notice and membership will be put on moderation. Repeat offenses will cause membership of offender to be terminated.

Sometimes, it is less easy to identify "controversial subjects" than it is to identify "inappropriate materials." A good guideline is that the purpose of the group is to better the quality of lives of pet rats, and to share stories about the pet rats we know. An example of a "controversial subject" might be rats used as "feeders" for reptiles or birds.

Pornography, discrimination on ANY basis and blasphemy will not be tolerated on the forum. You may be banned without further warning.

Of course, free speech is encouraged here. If you are unsure whether something you would like to post is a "controversial subject" or not, please get in touch with an administrator by PM and discuss it with that person.

Posts that are deemed "controversial" are subject to removal by the owner and/or moderator(s).

We politely request that swearing be kept off the forum. If you make a post that contains swearing, and words such as 'hell', 'damn' etc, that post may be deleted by an administrator, or an administrator may be in touch with you via PM to ask you to remove your post. Subsituting characters for letters is still not acceptable.

We usually work by a "three strikes, you're out" with the above rules and guidelines, but we reserve the right to ban anyone from the group.

    Three Strikes Policy

If members of the Facebook group Pet Rat Lovers forum post information, pictures, or any content that the moderator considers objectionable for any reason, same may be deleted. Members will be warned in a private message about inappropriate posts. Each member is entitled to three of these warnings. If a member chooses to persist in posting material that is inappropriate/objectionable, they may be banned from the group without further notice.

    Privacy policy

Please do not give out any personal information such as phone number, postal address, zip code, last name, or anything you do not wish others to know. If you choose to ignore this request, the Facebbok Group Pet Rat Lovers owner and/or moerator(s) cannot be held responsible for the consequences. Please know privacy is very important to us; we will never divulge your email address to anyone without first asking your consent. If you get "spam" emails from a member please report the email address to us so we can investigate.

    Your conduct

By using this forum or any service provided, you explicitly agree that: (a) you will not provide any content or conduct yourself in any way that may be construed as: unlawful; illegal; threatening; harmful; abusive; harassing; stalking; tortious; defamatory; libelous; vulgar; obscene; offensive; objectionable; pornographic; designed to interfere with or disrupt the operation of this forum or any service provided; infected with a virus or other destructive or deleterious programming routine; giving rise to civil or criminal liability; or in violation of an applicable local, national or international law; (b) you will not impersonate or misrepresent your association with any person or entity; you will not forge or otherwise seek to conceal or misrepresent the origin of any content provided by you; (c) you will not collect or harvest any information about other users; (d) you will not provide, and you will not use this forum to provide, any content or service in any commercial manner, or in any manner that would involve junk mail, spam, chain letters, pyramid schemes, or any other form of unauthorized advertising or commerce; you will not use this forum to promote or operate any service or content without the moderator's prior written consent; (e) you will not provide any content that may give rise to the moderator being held civilly or criminally liable, or that may be considered a violation of any local, national or international law, including -- but not limited to -- laws relating to copyrights, trademarks, patents, or trade secrets.

    Age and Responsibility:

Any minors requesting membership of the Facebbok Group Pet Rat Lovers will be asked to give written permission by a parent or gaurdian. Also, any minor in the Facebook group Pet Rat Lovers agrees to take personal responsibility for their posts. No forum administrator can be held responsible for the actions surrounding a minor's experience on the forum, as there is no way for moderators and administrators to determine the true age of the member.

    Responsible Breeding

The Facebook Group Pet Rat Lovers supports a policy of responsible breeding - that is to say, that if you breed, you are a registered rattery.

While it is not a condition of the group that you must be a registered rattery if you are a regular breeder, it is encouraged.

We always love to see babies who will have a good home, and try to help as much as we can in the event of "oops" litters. We strongly suggest that you contact one of the admins before posting any rats to adopt out. We are not however, a group to be posting rats for sale. Should you need to rehome your rats, they are to be wihtout cost. Should you have any accessories to sell, that may be discussed with the interested adopter off the Facebook Group Pet Rat Lovers only.

Why we will continue to pay $148 for a bag of Hills dog food.

Hills J/D Prescription Diet for canine mobility:

We told the vet that our dog, Panda, a 15 year old black & white Border-Collie, had cost us very little during her life, and now that she has reached old-age and is stricken with arthritis, we were prepared to spend a bit of money on her to try to make her pain-free. I know, crazy thing to say to a veterinarian. The vet recommended this Hills diet, and arranged for us to receive a sample bag so we could see the results before we committed to buying the product. We were horrified at the price of a bag at $148.00. However, when we did the numbers (see bottom of this post), it wasn't so bad. The company promised Panda would be a new dog in just 21 days. I know, we found it a bit hard to believe too. One of my friends even called 'Bullshit' on Facebook. Note that Panda has been an indoor dog all her life, and has not had enough exercise for her breed.

We kept a diary of Panda's progress on her new diet:

Started 28/6/13 - Day 1. Panda having trouble walking. Sleeps mostly. Can't do stairs. Sometimes has to be helped up from sitting - she gets stuck. Also started antibiotics for abscess in tooth. Has to be helped walking and going to the toilet. She has to be held up or she often just falls down. It is not much of a life for a dog.
29/06/2013 4:47 PM Day 2. Slept all day until after 4pm in bedroom. Appears to be stiff and sore today. Panda is not happy with the change of feed, and is eating the small amount of wet food and some of the dry food but not all. Will continue to re-present the leftovers through the evening, but have to keep Star from eating it. Star likes the flavour very much thank you. Update: ate leftovers 9pm.

30/06/2013 7:03 PM Day 3. Awake most of the day. Very alert after dinner and taking an interest in household activities. Noticed mouth/head still has very bad infected smell. Limping with right front paw and unsteady on back legs. Yawls. Still up and about 9.30pm

4/07/2013 9:43 PM Day 7. Awake nearly all day. We withheld her Tramal pain-killer this morning to see how she would do. She's a little stiff this evening when we finally administered her evening tablets, but she moved around okay most of the day. Still wobbly on back legs. Prefers the Chum over the new food, but it must be remembered that she has an infected tooth requiring antibiotics, and the dry texture is crunchier. We use a little bit of Chum mixed in with the dry food to give it more appeal. We'll see if she enjoys the dry food more when her mouth is not sore.

5/07/2013 10:25 PM Day 8 Is it me or is she moving a bit easier? Certainly more alert today. Still had bad posture in rear while finishing her leftovers just now. It must be remembered that her sore tooth has healed, but she is more lively. Tramal painkiller administered at 8pm, and this will be working now, but it usually makes her drowsy.

6/07/2013 7:39 PM Day 9 Cold & wet. She slept a lot today, so we gave her a painkiller at 3pm. She moved around better after that kicked in. Not so keen to finish the leftovers tonight. Withholding treats to generate some hunger and motivation to chew. Her tooth might still be hurting her. Finally ate leftovers at 10pm. At 11pm, she was not too bad. She stopped 'yawling' as much on her rear legs, and there was even a little spring in her gait. She's wandering around the house checking every corner in preparation for going to bed.

7/07/2013 9:14 PM Day 10. Finished food at 9pm. She's certainly walking better. Her gait is normal and she has stopped 'yawling' in the hind legs. She has more power in each rear leg, and is able to use them better. This is significant. No painkiller administered until bed-time. Cold, wet day! She is walking around the house a lot more. Might try a walk tomorrow.

8/07/2013 3:15 PM Day 11. Went for a 5-minute walk! Was very tired at the end and had to be helped up the two steps (She can make it up the single step into the lounge-room, but didn't try after her walk, until later). She's got a smile a mile wide! Antibiotics for tooth have finished and her mouth is much better, with no visible symptoms of discomfort. Painkiller administered 8pm. Stiff tonight, but still curious and followed me all around the house, even investigating the studio. She yawled today at the very end of her walk, but that was the only time. Otherwise, she has been firm on her back legs.

10/07/2013 10:29 PM Day 13. Panda is still up and alert at this late hour! She's been holding at the level reported, and has still gotten stuck sitting down once, on the lino where she can't get a grip with her claws. She definitely has more power in her rear legs, and is more alive. She's curious and investigating things. At this point, I'm convinced the super-food is working. No painkillers today.

13/07/2013 8:13 PM Day 16. Not using painkillers at all. Is alert most of the day, but grabs naps as an old dog should. Hips/rear legs have shown considerable improvement, but she still gets stuck in a crouch on the lino. She just can't get grip with her rear claws and doesn't have the strength to pull herself upright. Happening much less now. Otherwise, more strength obvious in rear legs. Still not keen on flavour and texture of the dry food. Drinking more water than usual, and has done since we began this diet.

16/07/2013 8:36 PM Day 19. Panda is a different dog. She still has problems with her chronic arthritis. She gets stuck halfway between sitting and standing on the lino floor. She can't get a grip to push herself upright, and with her rear legs slightly spread, she can't sit down properly either. When this happens, we have to lift her back into the standing position. This used to happen several times each day, but is now only happening about once every two days. Otherwise, she is bright and alert, even at 8.30pm, without painkillers. Since the painkillers were costing us $29 every two weeks or so, the Hills super-food will pay for itself. We still have more than a third of a 20kg bag left at this stage. I expect one bag will last just over 1 month. Panda is not keen on the flavour, however. She'll have to get used to it. She is eating it eventually, later in the evening.

17/07/2013 4:00 PM Day 20. Cold day. Panda's arthritis is flaring today. I can tell because she is keeping still when she can. She's still very curious about all that is going on in the house, and follows us if we move, but she's a little sore. Holding off giving her a painkiller deliberately to see if it gets any worse. If it does, I will administer one. Normally, I would have given her one. She hasn't been too bad up to 4pm. We were going to do a long walk today but will hold off due to her flare-up. She is certainly enthusiastic enough for a walk!

18/07/2013 4:24 PM Day 21. Panda's arthritis is still tender. Bright and alert. We went to the vet to show off our new life. All the staff at the vets were amazed at the difference in her. She was alert and curious at the vet's, but hadn't liked the car trip down. She walked all around the place sniffing everything. We even had to chase her down when she went wandering up towards the surgery. Previous vets visit, she just stayed at my side and didn't move unless I coaxed her. She has gained 300 grams, despite still not enjoying the dry food. We have withheld snacks to build motivation to eat. When we arrived home, she walked up the two front steps unassisted. She hasn't been able to do that in over a year. No painkillers today either, but we brought some home just in case. I would have taken her for a walk, but the vet's was a very big outing already. She is capable of a long walk now. The company was right. Our dog changed in 21 days.

Summary:

Panda is a fifteen year old dog with arthritis. We can't cure the arthritis, and must manage it. We could use drugs to do this, but the Hills feed is a much better way. It is clear that the supplements in the Hills feed have created an artificial lubricant for her swollen joints. She still has some discomfort, but nowhere near the crippling disability she had when we began. She is no longer incontinent, and can wait to go out if we read the signs. She is old, and bowel problems are expected. Yes, we have a new dog. Yes, the feed is worth every cent, and more. I don't know if the super-food will extend her life, but I do know that her remaining life will be of a much higher quality on the Hills Prescription Diet. There is no doubt in our family's minds that the change in Panda has been amazing, as promised, in just 21 days. I will testify that it is true. We will continue to use the diet.

The numbers:

1 x 20kg bag of Hills Prescription Diet for arthritis - $148.00

Vs.

15 cans of Chum @$3.23ea                               = $48.45
2 x 3kg bags of Pedigree Light & Mature @$10.52 = $21.04
2 x box Tramal painkillers                                   = $58.00
                                                                      -------------
                                                                           $127.49

Panda pain-free:                                                  Priceless

We are prepared to pay the extra $20.51 to gain the benefits of Panda being relatively pain free, although she still has chronic arthritis. The supplements in the Hills food have created an artificial lubricant for her bad joints. She has much more strength in her rear hips on this food. She is no longer completely dependant on us to help her move around, or move her bowels. We used to have to hold her up or she would fall over. We don't even have to watch her in the backyard anymore - she has enough strength to keep out of trouble.

While $148.00 seems like a lot of money for a 20kg bag of dog food, in actual reality it is only costing us $20.51. This makes it very worthwhile. Even if it was $100 more expensive, we would pay it to keep Panda pain-free. We mix a very small amount of our other dog, Star's Chum in with the dry food to add some flavour. Star needs to lose weight anyway...

We would recommend the Hills J/D Prescription Diet for Canine Mobility for dogs with arthritis.
